PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Responsible for defining the short and long-term product vision and executing on the strategy for the consumer product portfolio.  Accountable for product margins. 

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:                                                               
  • Cultivates and leads a high performing team of category managers by building their skills, coaching, and mentoring. Fosters a culture of accountability and ownership within the team.
  • Serves as the voice of the consumer brands, interacting and maintaining relationships with sponsored athletes, partners such as Zwift & Rouvy, social influencers, media, and the marketplace.  Leverages those relationships to gain market feedback and amplifies product exposure though social, events, races, etc.
  • Conducts and/or oversees consumer, market and competitive research.  Uses the research results to identify consumer issues, behaviors, needs and desires. 
  • Understands main competitors, including their strengths and weaknesses, how they acquire products, and how they take products to market.
  • In collaboration with the Category Managers and Marketing, creates and administers market feedback tools via personal communication, surveys, and focus groups with potential customers, existing customers, lead users, and sponsored athletes and teams.
  • Leads a committee of product, engineering, sales and marketing staff to collaboratively identify creative, innovative, and relevant product category opportunities to facilitate growth and development of the consumer product portfolio, accounting for market size and market potential.
  • Works with the Category Managers to understand market demands and the competitive marketplace and helps define the product strategy and product integration into current product portfolios. 
  • Assists the Category Managers in translating market opportunities into clear, prioritized product requirements/product scopes, developing product initializations, developing timelines and budgets, and determining the overall fit within the product line.
  • Develops financial models including sales forecasts, margin analysis, ROI, and suggested price points.
  • Manages the Product Development budget for consumer products.
  • Serves as a resource and support for the Category Manager during the formal product development gating process.  Assists the Category Managers in the Portfolio, Business Case and Product Launch Reviews.  Supports the Director of Engineering during the Product Design Reviews.
  • Manages and maintains a comprehensive product launch schedule for all consumer products, ensuring that internal resources (sales, marketing, sourcing, manufacturing) have the capacity to support the schedule.
  • Collaborates with Category Managers determine brand awareness strategies and new marketing opportunities for Marketing to execute on.  Develops compelling, relevant, and valuable propositions to drive consumer product sales both domestically and globally.
  • Determines, with the support of Marketing, what consumer events or trade shows should be attended to gain consumer feedback and insight, conduct competitive analyses, and serve as the voice of the brand.
  • Ensures coordinated communications regarding product development timelines and project status among all stakeholders.
  • Determines Post Launch needs of the consumer before the need arises and plans for those needs.
  • Assists Category Managers in analyzing product usage.  Oversees how products are being used and determines what additional needs and services would enhance the consumer’s experience.
  • Develops exit strategies for less successful products.
  • Communicates with appropriate internal customers (such as Customer Service & Sales) when products are being obsoleted, when products are temporarily out of stock, and what products are in development.

=         Participates in investigation of acquisition opportunities within the consumer products category as they arise.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Engineering, Business, Sociology or related work experience
  • 7+ years relevant experience in product development of consumer goods, including demonstrated success working in a leadership role
  • Avid cyclist or triathlete
  • Strong innovation mindset and background
  • Ample experience performing and analyzing market research
  • Experience directing teams in areas of product development, project planning, and gating reviews to achieve on-time and on-budget delivery
  • Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model
  • A highly energetic, action- and deliverables-oriented technical expert who possesses the combined skills and characteristics of leadership, innovation and teamwork to create and maintain a high-performance team
  • An effective communicator, with strong verbal and written skills
